EAST MEETS WEST
If you thought yoga was a ritual reserved for Far Eastern ascentics, you're in for a pleasant surprise. An updated version of this ancient discipline, courtesy
of the Urban Yoga Workout, is presently de-stressing and strengthening city-busy bodies in New York and Los Angeles. Helping to develop mental, physical and spiritual harmony
in the body through balance, strength, concentration, proper breathing and body alignment,
Urban Yoga challenges both beginners and advanced students, says Noll Daniel, an Urban Yoga instructor at Body by Jake and Tina and the Molly Fox Studio in New York.
Noll, who helps demonstrate the postures here with model/yoga student Ericka, recommends that
you hold each position only as long as you can keep proper form, but, by the same token, challenge yourself a bit each session.
In other words, hold the pose longer, stretch a little further so you build stronger muscles. Over time, says Noll, you'll
learn patience, perseverence and concentration and be ready to take on new challenges with strength and grace.
One other tip: Breathe deeply and regularly to keep muscles fueled, mind alert, and tension away. A relaxing way to workout? You bet.
